I had an amount of energy, like a fireball that was so amped there were times I would just burn myself up and become a cinder … It took me a long while to really know how not to burn myself up. There is a self-righteousness that can come so much from a person’s 20’s. When I was 20, I was pretty self-righteous.

Obama Nominates John Brennan, 'Kill List' Architect, as New CIA Chief | Common Dreams

John Brennan’s career spans from the dark days of Bush’s torture program to Obama’s secretive ‘kill list’

At a White House ceremony on Monday afternoon, President Obama officially nominated his top counterterrorism advisor John Brennan to be the next director of the CIA.

In his assessment of the decision, the Guardian’s Glenn Greenwald argues that it should not be shocking that Brennan—who was withdrawn from consideration for CIA chief in 2008 because of his association with the CIA’s torture program under President Bush—has now been brought back by President Obama in 2013.

Greenwald called Obama’s nomination of Brennan a “symptom of Obama’s own extremism [in the controversial areas of torture, targeted killings, and the US drone policy], not a cause.”

Don't Give In: I hate misogynistic pigs…….but, I also hate misandry. Like, really...

I hate misogynistic pigs…….but, I also hate misandry. Like, really people? Do you not believe that men are oppressed too?

I am not saying this because I’m a man……because I’m not a man. I am a female. And this is why I think we should all get on broad the men’s rights activism train.

Talking…

I see your point.  The thing is, I think most men who are raped are raped by other men.  So really, men are the perpetrators in many of these cases as well.  A lot of the problems where women are seemingly the aggressors are resulting from the oppression women face in the first place.  Not saying we should accept those crimes, but there’s something to be said about it.  Also, I wonder how many female rapists are really mysandrists.  are they raping men because they hate men? or are there other factors?  It’s not that women can do no wrong, but i think women do wrong for different reasons than men who do wrong.  they come from different worlds.  But I do agree that men can be victims in some cases, and they cannot be ignored. I am a man who recognizes sexism and misogyny on a regular basis. I am also a victim of rape, and know that men can be just as cruel to other men as they are to women.

Also, a funny thing i just noticed.  Misogyny is recognized as an English word in this post, but misandry has a squiggly red line under it, and i’m not spelling it wrong.  Something to be said about that?

Say it’s 2245 you are the first from your family to immigrate from the US to China. The American economy is crumbling, you are underemployed, and you want your children to actually get a good education and have career opportunities, so you move to the economic and cultural center of the world - China.

It’s likely that I might have to spend most if not all of my money to do this. So you pack everything you own, you get there and you are broke. What next? The first thing I would do upon arrival is find other Americans who have come before me. I hope that they can show me how they got settled and help me do the same. Maybe this means letting me, my wife, and our children sleep in their basement for 3 months, or teaching us how to shop in a Chinese supermarket with only English or letting us copy off of their immigration / tax / work forms because we don’t know what they hell they say. And certainly show us how to get them into school.

Next, I ask them what they do for a job and if they can help me get one too. I am a lawyer in the states, but I don’t give a shit what I do in China as long as I can get my kids into a good school and make sure that they can do whatever they want. So, I ask Frank (he changed his name to 冯 because no one over here understands these crazy English names). Anyway, I ask 冯 where he works. He tells me that he has a pizza shop called Cowboy Baseball Mountains (for some reason a combination of 7 “American” words have to be in all pizza shops). Anyway, he says I can work there while I learn Chinese (which is really difficult because I only work with other Americas), save up money, and am able to move out of his basement.

So I get to work. And I work my ass off. I don’t give a damn, I’ll work 25 hours a day if I have to. I am not about to move my family half way around the world and then let them down. Eventually, I am able to save up enough money to move into a new place. Luckily another American family I knew just moved up to a bigger house and knew we were looking for a starter. It was great, because I’d be screwed if I had to a look for a place in chinese on the market.

A couple of years go by and my kids are doing great in school. They speak Chinese better than they speak English now. Which is great, seeing as I still don’t speak a lick of it because I’ve been making, selling, and delivering pizzas this whole time with 冯 and some asshole named 杜 who just moved here from Texas. Luckily my kids help me translate anytime that something unexpected comes up.

A few more years go by and I have finally scraped together enough money so I can stop working for 冯 and I can finally start my own thing. You know what I am really good at? Making pizzas. I’ve made 10,000 pizzas over the last 10 years and I’ll be damned if I don’t make the best crust and the tangiest sauce this side of the Yangtze. Also, 冯 showed me how to run the business and told me he would help walk me through the start-up. This is going to be great. I can’t wait to open Cadillac Swamps and start working for myself. However, I have to spend most of my capital in starting this place up. So I ask my son and daughter (who are in high school now and are really embarrassed of their round, blue eyes, which breaks my heart because god they look just like their grandmother’s eyes) to help me until I can start up the restaurant. My wife works there too. I say works there to be nice, it’s more like we live there. But hey, we are together and making it work. If we all stick together we can really make this place a success.

A year or so later, I get a call from my college roommate. He tells me his brother Jason just got fired from his job and is through with the US and is determined to come to China. I tell him to have Jason give me a call. I can help him out. Hell, if he and his family need to crash in my basement for a few months that is cool with me. And don’t worry about a job. I’ve got him covered.

Starting the dialoge early

  • Seven year old:

If you say beep that means it's a bad word, right?

  • Me:

Sometimes on shows or in a song they do use a beep to take out words people don't like to hear.

  • Seven year old:

Yeah, like the f word or the s word or the n word.

  • Me:

And that's one I never want to hear you say ever ever. The other ones aren't meant to hurt people's feelings the way the n word is.

  • Seven year old:

    It's REALLY bad.

  • Eight year old:

    m What's the n word?

  • Me:

It's a word that's was made up to be very mean to people with darker skin. It says that they're not people and it's a horrible word to use.

  • Seven year old:

    It's racist!

  • Me:

Yes it is and being racist is one of the worst things because it's being mean to people for something that they can't change about themselves.

  • Eight year old:

    So it's bullying?

  • Me:

    It's worse than bullying!

  • Eight year old:

    Worse than bullying?

  • Me:

Bullying is being mean to people and not treating them very nicely racism is being meant to people because of where their family comes from or what colour their skin is. It's making them less than a person. It's like being mean to someone for not being the same gender as you. It's makes them less of a person.

  • Seven year old:

Like boys being mean to girls?

  • Me:

    Exactly.

  • Seven year old:

    Is that racism?

  • Me:

No if a boy is mean to a girl just because she's a girl that's called misogyny and if a girl is mean to a girl because she's a girl that's internalized misogyny. It's saying that girls are worth less a people. It's even worse than just plain bullying. You should treat all people like people.

  • Eight year old:

But what's it called when a girl is mean to a boy.

  • Me:

Well that's misandry but it doesn't happen very often.

  • Eight year old:

Yeah it does. When [name] was taking toys from me that was a girl being mean to a boy.

  • Me:

No that was bullying. She was just doing to be mean, not because you were a boy. But last week when [other name] said it was bad to wear nail polish because it was only for girls. That's being mean to girls because it makes all girls feel bad.

  • Eight year old:

    OH! That's mean!

  • Seven year old:

That's not nice to any girls. You can wear nail polish if you're a boy or a girl so long as you have fingers.
